you look at my decrepit yard and i ask you to feed me
currently, the method of procurring biological nourishment that i enjoy the most is the process of home and communal gardening.
Here i ask you to consider feeding me by equiping me with guidance on production systems or more directly providing me with living or natural propogation materials or, well, with food.
here are my general gardening needs and how i typically make due:
- seeds which i procure through various seed exchange libraries and also which i harvest while visiting other gardens
- sprouts which i nurse from seed or procure very rarely these days from a nonprofit garden that gives out free nursery extras at their weekly produce pick up
- composts which i have in two piles, a fast pile meant for clean kitchen scraps and garden scraps and a second, slower, long-term pile made of chicken shit and chicken bedding
- soils which i blend by combining home compost, yard soil, and a small amendment of organic potting soil as i can't afford to make large soil purchases a habit
- liquid fertilizers which i concoct by submerging invasive weeds in a lidded bucket for two months before straining out the putrid dregs
- dry fertilizers which i dehydrate from chicken egg shells, banana peels, used coffee grounds, and worm castings
- cuttings which i rarely obtain, really on only one occasion, when i found a dragonfruit segment callousing in my daughter's room
- tactics which i source from huge online digital video dissemination algorithms but also by scouring open pdf and epub libraries
- anecdotes which i wrest from any person who will talk with me in person or online
- harvests which i extract by processing the above elements in a variety of combinations, ideally as a holistic system, but also i will receive a harvest in trade or as gifts from friends
here are examples in recent memory of nutriment i have fed upon:
the pods of the bolted rat-tail radish, eaten while squatting
the pods of the bolted kensington public library arugula, eating while standing very straight
the pods of the bolted arif okra, mature pods at first but now, after quietly watching a young boy feeding himself from the garden, strictly only the crisp fingerling shaped pods, still fragrant and dewey and satin like their buck-eyed blushing okra flower
the countless fruit of the cash machine ely summer squash eaten in a million ways
the fruit of the little free kensington seed library kabocha squash roasted for soups, sweet pies, and pasta
the over-two-pound fruit of a volunteer heirloom tomato that a finch or a sparrow or a california towhee shit out and into our garden bed
the ever-stacking seussian leaves of the two olivewood garden kale
the whole entirety of the fruit from the city farmers titan watermelon except for the seed which i don't recall personally seed saving so what happened to those seed?
the leaves and stalks of the various colored arif chards, yellows greens pinks reds ribbons sliced thinly and sauteed in oil in the way zoey told me they were instructed to do so by arif founders
the blossoms of the city farmer pumpkin that was meant to produce for a children's pumpkin growing contest but never did produce anything past shriveled pale inchoate fruit but instead fed us all with many flourishing small tender blossoms enveloped in queso and corn tortilla and fried, and then with their large firm blossoms also fried but not before being stuffed with ricotta, herbs, and lemon zest
various peppers from pj and kevin, chopped and quick pickled
fig leaves in sugar syrups
Ganoderma polychromum fruiting body, foraged and laborously sliced, dried, ground, redried, stored, and occasionally sprinkled in cold or hot water
california poppy flower, leaves, stems, roots, chopped finely, soaked in everclear over two months, strained, stored in droppers, dropped in night time teas, begged of, pleaded of, cried over but still never really producing any desired calming sleep
copious amounts of basils, thai, black opal, italian, always cooked before eaten
purple yellow and green bush bean pods, eaten quickly and often forgotten quickly
